The protagonist of the game - Kratos, a former Spartan general who won power in the battle with the barbarians. Kratos army was close to defeat, when he asked for the war god Ares to help defeat his enemies. Ares helped him by giving weapons (swords of Chaos) and destroying the barbarians, but for that Kratos had to serve him and fulfill any orders. Once Ares is ordered to destroy a village. Kratos burst into the house and killed two first got people. These were his wife and daughter. Ares will attack Athens. Since the gods made a vow not to fight each other, they can not protect the city.
